It all started out innocent enough. Haha. Famous last words, right? Well, we were just about in bed, myself, Chris Beauchamp (the star) and Gary Burns, both from CCG. We were alone in the cabin, Gary tucked in when headlights lit up the parking lot. And who emerged form the vehicles? Canadians! So we shared the cabin and proceeded to uncork a bottle of some sort of spirit to celebrate the journey and arrival. We found a log book in the cabin, new, but with one message that caught our eyes: The Schoharie Cabin Challenge. This challenged anyone to slip through the arms of the chairs in the cabin. We looked at each other, smiled and dived for the chairs. Michel Gagnon, from Casque Grotto in Montreal is pictured (unsuccessfully) navigating the tightest squeeze. It always gets you at the half way point. |
Only Gary Burns (left) from CCG completed the challenge successfully. Right-O! Then the challenge took a turn as we eyed more things to conquer. And there it was. Tall, slender, solidly built and begging for someone to squeeze into her. No, get your mind out of the gutter. I'm talking about the ladder. Seen here is Chris Beauchamp 1/2 way through. Will he make it the rest of the way? Even with a beer beckoning him on? |
Chris soon realized he was in over his . . . um, hips. Stuck! And what does one do when stuck? Strip layers off and keep trying to squeeze your way out. Well, after about 15 minutes he gave up exhausted. The medics had to administer alcohol to his wounds. |
So the rescue was put into progress. The Canadians leapt at the opportunity to use their electric tools and soon emerged from their vans armed and ready. Removing screws gave a new meaning to "A Screw Loose" to Chris' thoughts of attempting this ill-fated feat. |
With all the necessary screws removed, the team gathered for one swift effort of bending the left plank of the ladder out enough to knock a step down. It even took a sledge hammer to do the knocking. Rescue work is not easy stuff. |
Free at last, Chris looks back on his nemesis, not so much bruised on his body as much as his ego. |
Finally the team reassembles the ladder so as to "leave no trace." A big Congrats to the Rescue Team for a swift operation! |
Days later Chris is photographed in his new-found life after this eye-opening experience and life-changing moment. |
