Rescue workers found the bodies of six people who suffocated deep in an underground cavern on Spain's Canary Islands on Sunday MADRID (Reuters) - Rescue workers found the bodies of six people who suffocated deep in an underground cavern on Spain's Canary Islands on Sunday, a spokeswoman said.
The six were part of a group of 30, including scientists and members of a nature organisation, who had been exploring caves on Tenerife on Saturday. Most had managed to get out unaided, but eight were rescued in the early hours of the morning with acute breathing difficulties and were taken to a hospital.
Rescuers found the last six in the afternoon. There were five men and one woman, and one of the men was Italian.
"I can confirm there are six dead, and we have recovered five of the bodies so far," a spokeswoman for the emergency services said.
She said the missing were 1,500 to 2,000 metres (5,000 to 6,500 feet) underground and access for rescue workers was very difficult.
The official cause of death would not be confirmed until there was an autopsy, but initially it looked like lack of oxygen rather than toxic gas, she said.
"The tunnels are very narrow. There is not much air and this was a big group," she earlier said.
The underground labyrinths on the volcanic island of Tenerife, off the coast of Morocco, are known to some locals. Newspaper El Pais said some were tunnels excavated in the 19th century in the search for water and that they were often filled with volcanic gases.
The Teide mountain on Tenerife is one of Europe's few active volcanoes. |

Cave hole goes into record books as Britain's ealiest dated cemetary. From Weston & Sommerset - Mercury:
Scientists have discovered that a cave in Burrington Combe is the site of an ancient cemetery of international importance.
Aveline's Hole is the earliest scientifically dated cemetery in Britain.
Radiocarbon dating of samples from 800 human bone fragments taken from the site has confirmed that they go back to a time shortly after the end of the last Ice Age, about 10,000 years ago. And they show what may be the earliest recorded example of osteoarthritis in Britain.
The bones and teeth, excavated in the early 20th century, belonged to about 21 people.
They are all that survive from a much larger quantity of bones - the rest were destroyed in a bombing raid on Bristol during World War Two.
The cave was originally discovered in the 18th century when there were reports of between 70 and 100 skeletons lying on the floor side by side.
An expert said Aveline's Hole is significant because it is an early example of all the cemeteries which are features of our towns and countryside and markers of our culture and civilisation.
Christopher Hawkes, assistant at Wells Museum, said: "We intend to mount a temporary exhibition of the remains in the near future here."

Study of newly found cave near Springfield will outlast present researchers KY3, MO
SPRINGFIELD -- Paleontologist Matt Forir expected to find another 50-foot, trash-filled pit when he went to investigate a cave unearthed by construction workers just southwest of Springfield. He could not have been more wrong.
The dynamite that blasted into limestone for a new road in Greene County unveiled proof that 1,400-pound short-faced bears roamed the Ozarks during the Ice Age, and they struggled with arthritis and gout. Forir and other researchers are also investigating the possibility that herds of peccary -- piglike animals -- sought shelter in caves thousands of years ago, as opposed to being dragged in by predators for food.
"Everywhere you look in here, you find something significant," said Forir, president of Missouri Speleological Survey.

Ulster County Mine Home for Indiana Bats From the February issue of New York State Conservationist magazine:
Mine is Home for Hibernating Bats
Sometimes, finding and protecting biodiversity requires people to strap on hard hats and go underground. Two years ago, NYNHP zoologists teamed with the DEC Endangered Species Unit and regional biologists to search a mine in Ulster County for hibernating rare bats, particularly the federally designated endangered Indiana bat. Although Indiana bats range throughout the eastern United States, they hibernate in only a few sites, with 85 percent of all Indiana bats using just seven caves and mines, and nearly half of all Indiana bats using just two caves. The Ulster County mine had been surveyed in the early 1980s, but when a previously unvisited section of the mine was explored, biologists found that it harbored more than 500 Indiana bats and about 5,000 bats of other species. Although biologists in New York have surveyed more than 120 mines and caves for Indiana bats, the Ulster County Mine is only the eighth habitat found to harbor them. |

Tom Schroth announces current status of Leigh Cave Fellow Cavers,
Please note that access to Leigh Cave has been interrupted due to a liability
insurance issue with the Round Valley Recreation Area (RVRA) Administration.
I received notification of this via a letter postmarked Friday, November 22
and received on Monday, November 26.
Since there have been several emails circulating recently on this matter,
resulting from Leigh Cave Trip Leaders being denied access, I'll provide a
synopsis of the evolution and status of the insurance issue. Please feel
free to contact me directly if you would like a more detailed account.
More than a year ago, the administrative oversight of Leigh Cave was
transferred from the New Jersey Water Supply Authority (NJWSA) to the Round
Valley Recreation Area within the New Jersey Department of Parks and
Forestry. The business manager of the NJWSA advised Ed Sira and me, at a
meeting that we had with him, that the transfer was due to the following two
reasons: 1) The NJWSA's business is water supply rather than recreation, and
it decided to divest itself of the responsibility for recreational activities
on its land; and 2) the NJWSA had growing liability exposure concerns as its
insurance premiums rose dramatically last year (to about $1M/yr.). Note that
the land on which Leigh Cave is located is still owned by the NJWSA, which is
a semi-autonymous organization within the Department of Environmental
Protection (DEP).
The contract that the New Jersey Cave Conservancy (NJCC) had with the NJWSA
during the past fifteen years (five year contract terms) expired in January
of 2001, but the NJWSA choose not to renew because of the pending transfer of
administrative oversight to the RVRA.
After the transfer, the RVRA preferred to switch from the past contract to a
Special Use Permit. This was because it uses Special Use Permits for other
special events (like SCUBA diving), and that using its Special Use Permit for
Leigh Cave Access would be easier for the RVRA than extending a contract that
would have to be authorized by the State Attorney General's office.
>From the beginning, I did not feel that the RVRA's Special Use Permit was the
proper vehicle for managing access to Leigh Cave but, in the spirit of
cooperation, I spent considerable time negotiating modifications to the
RVRA's standard Special Use Permit in an effort to force fit it to apply to
Leigh Cave use.
The major stumbling block became a condition of the Special Use Permit that
requires a $1M liability insurance policy. Such insurance protecting the
State would be required of the NJCC. Individual cavers, trip leaders and
Grottos would not be required to carry their own liability insurance. The
NJCC Board of Directors spent considerable time researching liability
insurance, and was unable to obtain a policy that would be remotely
affordable.
This has been communicated to the RVRA Superintendent, and I was hoping that
she would waive the insurance requirement, since the State has never before
required the NJCC to carry liability insurance. In the past, the liability
protection language in our contract, along with the requirement that everyone
entering Leigh Cave sign a liability waiver, was acceptable to the State as
providing adequate liability protection.
Apparently, there are one or more decision makers in the RVRA and/or NJWSA
who have recently targeted the liability insurance issue. The NJCC must now
identify and meet with them in order to negotiate a solution. We have
crafted a number of options that we will propose, including the purchase of
Leigh Cave.
The NJCC will continue to negotiate toward a workable agreement with the
State as quickly as possible. In the meantime, please refrain from visiting
the Leigh Cave property. Trespassing might only hinder our progress.
Lastly, if any of you has legal and/or insurance expertise and is agreeable
to consulting with the NJCC on the Leigh Cave liability insurance issue,
please advise me.
Best Regards,
Tom Schroth

How's This for a Nightmare? Updated: Tue, Aug 28 7:21 AM EDT
VIENNA (Reuters) - A midnight feast turned into horror for one Austrian woman when she opened the door to her pantry and was mobbed by over 100 flying bats, police said on Monday.
It took four experts from the Association of Bat Science and a police officer to free the protected nocturnal creatures from the woman's apartment in central Vienna.
The bats had been trapped in the building's courtyard by a pigeon net and found their way into her pantry through an open window.

Massive Underground Caves Found In China Australian Broadcast Corporation - July 9 2001
Scientists have reportedly discovered a series of underground caves and rivers that are the biggest in China and possibly the world.
The state-run Xinhua news agency reports a team of international scientists discovered the hundreds of caves and rivers in Nandan county of China's southern Guangxi autonomous region.
Xinhua says one of the caves is 2,968 metres long and filled with unique pearl, ball and cake-shaped formations.
Many stone pearls, some as big as 15 centimetres thick, were also found.
"The biggest cave in a hill is almost as high as the hill itself with stalagmites and stalactites in all forms," Xinhua reported.
"The caves and the underground rivers are the largest and rarest in China in terms of size and number, and some experts believe they are also the biggest in the world."
Xinhua says the team of Chinese, British and American scientists also discovered two large underground rivers.
One river, named Ganhe, was 3.5 kilometres long, with its widest point measuring 50 metres across, and a maximum depth of 60 metres. |
